Roadworthy Certificate FAQs

General information only. Always check current requirements on the Queensland Government website.

What is a Queensland safety certificate?

A safety certificate shows a vehicle has passed an inspection of its safety-related parts against Queensland's minimum safety standards. It is issued by an Approved Inspection Station (AIS). It is not a comprehensive mechanical condition report or a guarantee of future reliability.

Is a roadworthy certificate the same as a safety certificate?

Yes. In Queensland the official name is a 'safety certificate'. Most people still call it a roadworthy, roadworthy certificate or RWC. They mean the same thing.

When do I need a safety certificate in Queensland?

Generally when transferring a registered light vehicle to a new owner, transferring registration from another state or territory, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. You no longer need a safety certificate just to advertise a vehicle for sale, but generally need a current one before disposing of it to someone other than a dealer. Exemptions apply; check the Queensland Government guidance for your situation.

How long is a safety certificate valid?

For private sellers, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. Different validity periods apply to licensed motor dealers.

Do you come to my home or workplace?

Yes, that's the whole idea. We inspect at your home, workplace or another suitable location within our service area, provided the vehicle is on firm, level ground with safe access around it and you have permission to use the space.

Which suburbs do you service?

We focus on Brisbane Northside and the Samford region, including Samford Valley, Dayboro, Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron, Arana Hills, Bunya, Eatons Hill, Albany Creek, Highvale, Wights Mountain, Yugar, Camp Mountain and Draper. Use the area checker to confirm your suburb.

What types of vehicles can you inspect?

Cars, SUVs, utes and 4WDs, plus eligible trailers and caravans. We do not offer motorcycle roadworthys. For COIs or unusual vehicles, contact us to confirm the vehicle type and applicable approvals before booking.

What happens if my vehicle does not pass?

You'll receive a written report identifying the items that need attention, with an explanation of the applicable safety requirements. We'll explain the reinspection process and relevant timing for your vehicle. Our connection with ZK AUTOS does not change the TMR standards used to assess your vehicle.

How long does an inspection take?

Inspection time depends on the vehicle and its condition. We'll give you an estimate when you book.

What do I need to prepare before an inspection?

Have the vehicle clean enough to inspect, parked on firm level ground, with keys available and the registration details handy. Check that all lights, the horn, wipers and seatbelts work, and that tyres have adequate tread.

How do I book an appointment?

Check your suburb with the area checker, then send a booking request through our booking form. We'll confirm a suitable time with you directly.

Do trailers and caravans require a different inspection?

Trailers and caravans are inspected for a safety certificate too, but with a different checklist: coupling, safety chains, brakes, lights, wheels and body. Lighter trailers may be exempt, so check the Queensland Government requirements for your trailer's ATM.

How is Rocket Roadworthys connected to ZK AUTOS?

Rocket Roadworthys is fuelled by ZK AUTOS, a local trusted mechanical workshop. Roadworthy inspections follow the guidelines set by Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The outcome is based on your vehicle's condition and the applicable safety standards, not on whether you arrange mechanical work.

Can I check my car before the inspection?

Yes. Check lights, tyre condition, wipers and washers, mirrors, seatbelts, the horn and obvious body damage. Tell us about any warning lights, leaks, braking or steering concerns. These checks help you prepare but do not replace the full TMR-guided inspection or guarantee a pass.
