Safety certificates
Mobile Roadworthy Certificates for Cars, Utes & 4WDs
Selling or transferring a registered light vehicle in Queensland? Check the safety certificate requirements for your situation. We bring a TMR-guided inspection to your home or workplace.
What's a safety certificate?
A safety certificate, still widely called a roadworthy or RWC, confirms that a vehicle met the minimum safety standards at the time of inspection. It's not a mechanical health check or a pre-purchase inspection.
For private sellers, it's valid for 2 months or 2,000 km from issue, whichever comes first. You no longer need a certificate just to advertise a vehicle, but generally need a current one before disposing of it to someone other than a dealer.
Fuelled by ZK AUTOS, we assess your vehicle against TMR guidelines. If something doesn't pass, you'll receive a written list of items to address and an explanation of the relevant requirements and reinspection process.
We inspect cars, SUVs, utes and 4WDs. Motorcycle roadworthys are not offered. Let us know about modifications, warning lights or special registration circumstances before booking.
Typically inspected

- Brakes
- Steering and suspension

Before your inspection
Know what to check on your car
A few simple checks can help you spot obvious issues before your appointment. We inspect to TMR guidelines, not a sales checklist.
Lights & indicators
Check headlights, high and low beam, indicators, brake lights, tail lights and number plate lights. Ask someone to help check the rear lights.
Tyres & wheels
Look for worn tread, cuts, bulges and uneven wear. Check pressures against the vehicle's placard. Visible damage or exposed cords need professional attention.
Windscreen, wipers & mirrors
Look for cracks or damage in your view of the road. Test the washers and wipers and check that mirrors are secure and usable.
Seatbelts & seats
Check that belts latch, retract and are not frayed. Seats should be secure. Tell us about any restraint or airbag warning lights.
Brakes, steering & suspension
Note any pulling, unusual noise, vibration, loose steering or braking concerns during normal use. These require an inspector's assessment; do not attempt unsafe tests.
Body, doors & visible leaks
Look for obvious rust, sharp edges, damaged panels or fluid leaks. Check door latches and the horn. Mention any concerns when arranging the inspection.
These are visual and everyday-use checks only, not the full inspection or a guarantee of passing. Do not get underneath an unsupported vehicle. If it feels unsafe to drive, stop using it and seek professional advice.
TMR vehicle inspection manualsCommon questions
What is a Queensland safety certificate?
A safety certificate shows a vehicle has passed an inspection of its safety-related parts against Queensland's minimum safety standards. It is issued by an Approved Inspection Station (AIS). It is not a comprehensive mechanical condition report or a guarantee of future reliability.
Is a roadworthy certificate the same as a safety certificate?
Yes. In Queensland the official name is a 'safety certificate'. Most people still call it a roadworthy, roadworthy certificate or RWC. They mean the same thing.
When do I need a safety certificate in Queensland?
Generally when transferring a registered light vehicle to a new owner, transferring registration from another state or territory, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. You no longer need a safety certificate just to advertise a vehicle for sale, but generally need a current one before disposing of it to someone other than a dealer. Exemptions apply; check the Queensland Government guidance for your situation.
How long is a safety certificate valid?
For private sellers, a safety certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. Different validity periods apply to licensed motor dealers.
What happens if my vehicle does not pass?
You'll receive a written report identifying the items that need attention, with an explanation of the applicable safety requirements. We'll explain the reinspection process and relevant timing for your vehicle. Our connection with ZK AUTOS does not change the TMR standards used to assess your vehicle.
What do I need to prepare before an inspection?
Have the vehicle clean enough to inspect, parked on firm level ground, with keys available and the registration details handy. Check that all lights, the horn, wipers and seatbelts work, and that tyres have adequate tread.
